Link exchange is a vitally important part of any website strategy. It has been shown that most people who visit websites do so after finding that website’s link on another site. It is also important to exchange links with high page ranking sites in order to gain leverage for your own higher pagerank. Although you would never want to put up a huge number of links and thus be considered merely a link farm, this is not a good website strategy. You should strive to exchange links with several sites, preferably those with high pageranks, and those that have some bearing on what your website is all about.

When you exchange links you are actually giving your website multiple ways in which it can receive traffic, this is a pretty important website strategy. Search engines will weigh the importance of your site in many ways. One of these ways is in the number of links that you are sharing with other relevant sites. Again, it is important that you note the pagerank of the sites that you are linking to and from. Higher pagerank in the sites that you are exchanging links with will ultimately mean a higher pagerank for you.

The other way that you are helping your site by exchanging links is in the traffic that you will gain from these other sites. Pagerank comes into play here as well. It is common knowledge that high ranking pages get more traffic. The more traffic that a site which has your link receives the more traffic your site will be exposed to. Imagine exchanging links with another website that has a traffic base of around 100,000 each month. You can virtually guarantee that some of those visitors will indeed visit your site as well once they see that your website offers the same information or products that they are searching for. If you are exchanging links, be sure that you are doing so with sites that are offering a similar product or information as your website. After all, someone who is searching for baby clothing is not likely to click a link that goes to car maintenance. Be sure that you check out the sites you are exchanging links with and make yourself familiar with their content and/or products to ensure that they are relevant to your site.

Once you have chosen the sites for your link exchange contact those site owners and request the exchange. You should understand that virtually every website owner knows the importance of link exchange. Nearly every site you visit will have links to other sites. This is because website owners realize that in order to gain popularity and ultimately a high traffic base, link exchanges are simply a must.
